This formula is designed for babies that are sensitive to the sugar that is found in cow’s milk - lactose. Lactose intolerance is rare and is caused by low levels of the enzyme that degrades the lactose. This formula is based on cow’s milk with reduced levels of the sugar lactose. It does contain small amounts of lactose, so it can’t be used in diseases such as Galactosemia, in which infants shouldn’t consume lactose at all.  

 

Lactose softens the stool a little and decreases the risk of fecal stones and is also helpful to the digestion of calcium in the body. Although commercial brands recommend using this formula during bouts of diarrhea, there is still no consensus about this matter.
